By definition, agriculture is, “the science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for growing crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool and other products.” What does your mind’s eye see when you think of agriculture? For me, it’s a farmer wearing bib overalls, working in a corn field, performing back-breaking work and herding cows. Oh, and chickens – lots of chickens. The reality is, there is so much more to it than that; ag is way cooler than many people imagine. Here are the top five reasons to work for an ag company:

So. Many. Jobs.

If you want a job, agriculture has plenty to choose from. In recent years, the consumption of agricultural products has seen exponential growth. Consumer demand is at an all-time high and there is no end in sight. By 2050, the world’s population is projected to reach nine billion people. This means we can expect an increased demand for food and less land used for production, while farmers also strive to conserve natural resources and energy. The need for hard workers and creative minds is great; the industry will need individuals who are ready to support this ever-changing industry.

Ag is not just for farmers.

You don’t want to be a farmer? Perfect. There are a lot of industrial, technical and managerial jobs associated with ag. Farmers play a critical role, but they cannot do it alone. Agriculture is a diverse industry that provides job seekers with a wide variety of careers to choose from. There is a significant number of jobs in production, marketing, sales, logistics, research, agronomy, engineering, IT, HR and much more – there is something for everyone!

A growing industry.

Agriculture touches us all in multiple ways. The need to feed the world will only continue to swell, which will drive high demand for qualified job seekers. The U.S. Department of Labor projects significant growth in selected food, renewable energy and environmental jobs through 2018 and beyond.

Technology and innovation.

Agriculture looks different today than it did 20 years ago. Our farmers are using GPS and can even monitor and manage their irrigation pivots from their smartphones. Degrees in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) are critical to keep up with the demanding challenges that will impact the world. The industry has invested in research and development, and is striving to develop and innovate with the environment in mind. This forward-thinking approach is leading to plentiful opportunities.
