Another new year has come, and it’s the right time for a fresh start. Now is the time to start thinking about what lay ahead of us in terms of personal, professional and societal developments. One thing is for certain: Technology will continue to play an ever-increasing role in the narrative of our lives. The big question for all: “How do we interact with this technology, and how do we let it into our lives?”
A Brief Look at Last Year
In 2017, there was renewed talk about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machines starting to learn and becoming self-aware. Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking all weighed in on the subject. Of course, many people also took the opportunity to (once again) predict the end of the world in a type of Terminator, Rise of the Machines Doom’s Day scenario. My opinion, for what it’s worth, is that the future of self-learning technology holds tremendous opportunities for all walks of life. The key is to use it responsibly and be conscious about how we interact with it on a daily basis.
A Brief Look at Advancements in Center Pivot Irrigation Products
Think about all the technology we use on the farm today. We have found ways to make our center pivot irrigation products more efficient, remotely track our livestock and have our tractors steer themselves. While the idea of a fully autonomous farm is more science fiction than reality at this point, we as a society are quickly moving down this path. The thing to remember is that human interaction and oversight are still required; highly skilled technicians on your staff need to remain a factor in implementing this type of technology. The equipment and software you use will continue to get smarter, and, therefore, your people will need to get smarter, too.
I am sure you have all heard the old adage, “Work smarter, not harder.” Well, in today’s world, this is even more poignant than ever. Technology is meant to drive efficiencies, lower costs and increase outputs; but, without skilled people managing this technology, it will not perform the way we wish, and we will not achieve our desired results.
